Tech is more in demand now than ever, and that is a trend that we are likely to keep seeing. Almost everything we do in our daily lives relies on some type of technology to make it happen.

Banking on your laptop, playing a game on your mobile phone, listening to music, completing your work. The tech world is expanding, and you can be part of it – by retraining.
There are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills, build portfolios, and build – without having formal training.
So how can you choose which role might suit you, and what skills you want to learn?
In-demand
Before you start learning the skills you need, it is good to look at what is in demand now and what the predictions are for the future. Studies and reports into the tech industry can often make calculated assessments of how technology will look in 2,5, and 10 years.
Although they can’t account for new discoveries, they can highlight trends.
AI, automation. SaaS, crypto, digitization, and more are highlighted as coming trends until 2023.
Look for what is now and will be in demand, and find something that is interesting to you.
Industries
People consider some common industries when they are discussing retraining – and often, they are in a traditional office. But there are plenty of other options, agriculture tech roles are big business, and there is a need for skilled individuals. The maritime industry is also an often-overlooked industry – specifically by women, but there are many programs that can offer incredible opportunities, like Volvo Penta.
Consider what industry you might like to work in, and combine the demand, your skills, and that too narrow down some role options.
On the job
If you want to have some formal training and can’t afford to leave a paid role, then on-the-job training can be very beneficial. These roles are in high demand and shouldn’t be one that you rely on. However, on-the-job training means you will get the most effective training, and the company gets a highly skilled individual that works well in the company already.
Online courses
If you can find free taster courses in the skill area you want to learn – take advantage of them. You can learn at your own pace and make sure that you enjoy the skills required ahead of making any time or financial commitments.
One of the best things about online courses is that they allow you to build a portfolio and can open the door to entry-level jobs in the industry.
Dedication
If you are retraining, you will need to be dedicated to your studies and lean into your previous experience too. Competition for great roles is high, so you’ll need to be dedicated to your learning process and make the most of any tools or free courses.
